Kiwi-Indian Duo Embraces Van Life: A Journey of Discovery
Young New Zealand residents Ami and Sagar have embarked on a transformative journey since September 2023, when they decided to quit their stable jobs to travel full time in their van, named Wander Bee. This decision marks a significant shift in their lives, as they embrace a new lifestyle and redefine the concept of home.
After more than a decade living in New Zealand, and having gained citizenship, the couple from Surat, Gujarat, is experiencing what they describe as an “adult gap year.” This term refers to a deliberate pause from traditional careers to pursue personal growth, travel, and new skills. Their adventure is built on a carefully planned budget of $160 per day and the freedom to camp in some of New Zealand’s most stunning locations.
Ami shared, “Growing up in India, we didn’t have the luxury to take an ‘adult gap year,’ but we wanted to experience what it feels like.” Convincing their families to support this lifestyle change was not easy. They faced questions and skepticism but communicated their vision clearly, sharing examples of successful Indian creators who have taken similar paths.
Initially, Ami and Sagar’s plan involved a year of travel. They saved diligently, ultimately resigning from their six-figure jobs to pursue their dream. Their journey began in 2024, exploring Asia and parts of Europe before returning to New Zealand in August 2025, where they solidified their commitment to life on the road.
Life as Digital Nomads
The couple quickly learned that adapting to the lifestyle of digital nomads presented its own challenges. “The shift was hard,” Ami admitted. “Understanding logistics and how to make this work full time required a lot of adjustment.”
Their content creation evolved significantly during their travels. Originally starting as a YouTube channel, they recognized the potential of Instagram for faster growth. Their account, @sagarandami, has surged from 2,000 followers in June 2025 to over 30,000 followers today. Ami manages logistics and communications, while Sagar focuses on creative aspects like editing and marketing.
The couple has collaborated with brands such as the New Zealand Tourism Board and Kiwi Rail, helping these companies gain visibility through their social media channels. They structure their days into work and filming segments, seeking out Department Of Conservation (DOC) campsites where they can work on their laptops before unwinding in the evenings.
Essentials for Van Life
Ami and Sagar emphasize three essential rules for anyone considering a similar lifestyle. First, they advise being flexible, as plans may frequently change. Second, they stress the importance of respecting local rules and regulations, particularly regarding freedom camping, which requires a commitment to maintaining clean environments. Lastly, they recommend downloading apps that facilitate this nomadic lifestyle, providing crucial information about camping locations and amenities.
Currently in New Zealand’s picturesque South Island, the couple has developed a fondness for the Mackenzie region, praising its serene landscapes and tranquility. As they continue their travels, they have set a goal to save $20,000 and reach 50,000 followers by the end of 2025. This financial target will help shape their future travel plans.
Ami and Sagar’s journey encapsulates a blend of discipline and dreams, illustrating what it truly means to start over in one’s 30s. As they navigate their new lifestyle, they continue to explore the beauty of New Zealand, one adventure at a time.
