Sikh Student Wins Case Against Ambulance Victoria Over Beard Policy

A 19-year-old Sikh paramedic student, Prabhjeet Gill, has successfully challenged a policy at Ambulance Victoria that required him to shave his beard before beginning his on-the-job training. The request was made to comply with personal protective equipment (PPE) mask regulations. Gill’s beard, worn for religious reasons, was central to his identity, leading him to seek alternative methods that would accommodate both his beliefs and safety requirements.

Gill proposed the use of the “Singh Thattha method,” a mask-fitting technique specifically designed for individuals with beards. This method employs an elastic band to secure medical masks without requiring the removal of facial hair. When his request was denied, Gill lodged a formal complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, alleging discrimination based on race and religion.

The dispute attracted widespread public attention as it highlighted the challenges faced by individuals balancing religious practices with professional obligations. Gill emphasized that shaving his beard would contradict his religious beliefs, further underscoring the significance of this case.

In response to the complaint, Ambulance Victoria amended its PPE policy to better accommodate cultural and religious beards. In a letter dated November 24 to the commission, the organization acknowledged its earlier oversight regarding Gill’s preferred mask-fitting method. The letter stated, “Perhaps unbeknownst to Mr Gill, Ambulance Victoria has reconsidered its position regarding the ‘Singh Thattha’ method of mask fitting for PPE and has recently engaged with Monash Health to assist with this method of mask fitting upon request by an AV employee.”

This policy change is being hailed as a significant move toward inclusivity within healthcare settings. It reflects a growing recognition that professional requirements can coexist with the cultural and religious practices of individuals.
