A third individual has been arrested in connection with the murder of US PhD student Kyle Whorrall, who was fatally attacked at a bus stop in Auckland earlier this year. Whorrall, aged 33, suffered severe injuries after being struck with a “large, bladed weapon” while waiting at a bus stop on St John’s Road on April 19, 2023. He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital, as reported by 1News.

The investigation into Whorrall’s death has led to significant developments. Police have confirmed that a second person has now been charged with murder, increasing the total number of arrests to three. Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin stated that the investigation gained momentum in September following the emergence of new evidence.

Details of the Arrests

According to Stuff, a 17-year-old male has been charged with murder and aggravated robbery, and he is expected to appear in the Auckland Youth Court soon. He is joined by another 17-year-old who faces the same charges. Additionally, a 33-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of being an accessory after the fact to murder. Baldwin emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing, with police determined to bring all responsible parties to justice.

In a significant turn of events, authorities discovered a machete in late September hidden in a reserve approximately 4 kilometers from the attack site. This evidence has bolstered the ongoing investigation.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigation

Whorrall’s mother, Carole Whorrall, has actively sought justice for her son. In October, she made an emotional appeal for anyone with information about the incident to come forward. “While my foremost priority is securing justice for Kyle and ensuring his legacy endures, I am equally concerned for the safety and well-being of all New Zealanders,” she stated, as quoted by 1News. She urged individuals to assist the police, emphasizing that even small pieces of information could significantly impact the case.

In May, to honor Whorrall’s memory, a tree was planted near the site of the attack. The local community and authorities have been urged to remain vigilant and assist in the investigation. Police have requested that anyone with information contact them on 105.

As the investigation continues, police have maintained communication with Whorrall’s family in California, keeping them informed of significant developments. Detective Inspector Baldwin reiterated the commitment to uncovering the truth surrounding this tragic incident and ensuring that justice is served.
