Interior designer Matt Reid, design lead at Warren and Mahoney in Wellington, has been recognized as the “emerging design professional” at the 2025 Interior Awards. Reid, who has over 12 years of experience in the architecture sector, specializes in creating tailored environments that reflect the unique needs of each client. As part of an ongoing Q&A series with professionals in the property market, he shared insights into his design philosophy and personal journey.

Reid resides in Pinehaven, Upper Hutt, with his wife, Natasha Kowalak-Reid, and their two children, Briarly, 3, and Ollie, three months. His passion for architecture was ignited during childhood visits to his father’s plumbing sites. “I was inspired by the process of construction and how spaces come to life,” he recalled. After earning a Master of Interior Architecture from Victoria University of Wellington in 2013, Reid began his career focused on creating spaces that resonate with both the occupants and their environments.

Designing with People, Place, and Possibility

Reid’s approach to design emphasizes three core values: people, place, and possibilities. He believes that understanding the needs of clients is essential to creating functional and inspiring spaces. “People are the spark that ignites an environment,” Reid explained. By listening closely to clients, he ensures that each project reflects their vision.

The concept of place drives Reid’s design process. He draws inspiration from the immediate context of a site, which helps imbue projects with a sense of belonging. “I love a challenge,” he stated, adding that confronting and reimagining design obstacles can lead to innovative solutions.

Reid and his family embarked on their own home renovation journey after purchasing a 1946 weatherboard house in Pinehaven in 2018. Initially described by the real estate agent as “an easy embrace,” the property required significant work. At $435,000, they felt the price was steep for a house that was cold and dated. However, their commitment to transforming the space sparked a comprehensive renovation.

Over the years, Reid and his wife gutted the interior, upgraded insulation, and opened up social spaces to create a light-filled home. They also enhanced the exterior with a new roof, fresh paint, and landscaping to integrate the house into its natural surroundings.

Practical Design Advice for Homeowners

Reid encourages homeowners to apply principles from commercial design to their own spaces. He advises them to carefully consider the balance of social and private areas based on their family’s lifestyle. Acknowledging the significance of place, he suggests drawing inspiration from the local environment to influence material choices and enhance the home’s character.

“Embrace the building shell you have,” Reid emphasized, noting that every structure presents both functional and aesthetic challenges. By identifying these and reimagining them, homeowners can unlock new possibilities for their living spaces.

He believes that homes should not only reflect personal style but also retain value for future resale. “Injecting personality through furniture and accessories is vital,” he stated. Reid shared his personal experience of uncovering beautiful native timber flooring during renovations. Despite its imperfections, he viewed it as a testament to the building’s history.

To fully appreciate a home, Reid recommends living in it for a period to discover its best features, such as light patterns and views. This understanding can significantly enhance the living experience and inform future design decisions.

As a professional dedicated to elevating interior spaces, Matt Reid continues to inspire others through his innovative approach to design and his commitment to creating environments that truly resonate with their inhabitants.
