Kiwi Magician Alan Watson Honoured with Star on Walk of Fame

Renowned New Zealand magician Alan Watson has been awarded a star on the New Zealand Walk of Fame in Ōrewa, celebrating his remarkable contribution to the world of magic over the past 45 years. The unveiling of the star took place on November 23, 2023, coinciding with Watson’s 75th birthday celebrations, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.

Watson, who frequently performs alongside his wife Michele Watson, has captivated audiences both in New Zealand and internationally. His career highlights include performances at iconic venues such as Fisherman’s Wharf and Waipuna Hotel, as well as a remarkable 26-year residency at Rainbow’s End. In a groundbreaking achievement, the couple became the first New Zealand close-up magicians to perform at the prestigious Magic Castle in Hollywood in 1987, introducing Kiwi magic to a global audience.

Global Recognition and Contributions

Throughout his career, Watson has received numerous accolades for his work in the magic community. His achievements include recognitions from the Academy of Magical Arts in Los Angeles, the Magic Circle in London, and the Milbourne Christopher Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year. In addition to his performances, Watson has dedicated the last 25 years to publishing the Magic New Zealand e-zine, which connects over 17,000 magicians across 78 countries.

In recognition of his services to magic, Watson was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in 2015. Gary Brown, chair of the New Zealand Walk of Fame, highlighted Watson’s impact on the entertainment industry, stating, “Alan Watson has brought joy, wonder, and inspiration to audiences for decades. His contribution to magic – both onstage and in the global community – is immense. His star is a fitting tribute to a truly remarkable career.”

Acknowledgements at the Ceremony

During the unveiling ceremony, fellow entertainer David Hartnell presented Watson with two prestigious international honours: a proclamation from the Society of American Magicians, recognizing his outstanding contributions to magic, and a Presidential Citation from the International President, commending his long-standing dedication to advancing the art of magic.
