Otago Athletes Shine as Finalists for Halberg Awards
The finalists for the prestigious Halberg Awards were announced last night, showcasing a remarkable array of talent from Otago and beyond. A total of thirty-two finalists across six categories will compete for top honors, with many athletes recognized for their outstanding performances over the past year.
Key Finalists in Spotlight
Among the notable contenders is Wanaka snowboarding star Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, who is a finalist for Sportswoman of the Year. Sadowski-Synnott, the recipient of the supreme award in 2022, continues to impress after securing the world slopestyle title and a gold medal at the Winter X Games. She faces stiff competition from Queenstown skier Alice Robinson, who has quickly ascended to elite status in alpine racing since winning the emerging talent award at the Halbergs in 2019.
Other finalists in the sportswoman category include Jorja Miller, a standout for the Black Ferns and sevens, Niamh Fisher-Black, the world road cycling champion, world series cross-country mountainbiking champion Sammie Maxwell, and doubles tennis player Erin Routliffe.
In the Sportsman of the Year category, Wanaka freeskier Luca Harrington stands out as a strong medal contender. Harrington secured gold in slopestyle as a late entry at the Winter X Games and also clinched the big air title at the world championships. His achievements position him favorably as he prepares for the Winter Olympics scheduled for February 2024. The competition includes Hamish Kerr, the world high jump champion, who is favored to win again. Other finalists include world steeplechase champion Geordie Beamish, football star Chris Wood, and golfer Ryan Fox.
Team and Coaching Excellence Recognized
The Halberg Awards will also feature a competitive Team of the Year category. The Black Ferns Sevens will aim to reclaim the title they won in 2023 after an impressive performance in the world series. They will face competition from the Kiwis, the Black Sox, Auckland FC, and the world champion men’s rowing pair of Ben Taylor and Oliver Welch, along with the men’s team pursuit cycling squad comprised of Nick Kergozou, Tom Sexton, Keegan Hornblow, and Marshall Erwood.
In the coaching category, Hamish McDougall, who has played a pivotal role in Harrington’s success, is among the nominees. Other finalists include Cory Sweeney, coach of the Black Ferns Sevens, rowing coach Mike Rodger, para cycling coach Brendan Cameron, and James Sandilands, who coaches Kerr.
Five exceptional young athletes are nominated for the Emerging Talent Award. Among them is Wanaka freeski sensation Finley Melville Ives, competing against Black Ferns rookie Braxton Sorensen-McGee, swimmer and surf lifesaver Zoe Pedersen, BMX junior world champion Lily Greenough, and impressive runner Sam Ruthe.
The finalists were chosen by a panel consisting of former elite athletes, coaches, sports administrators, and media representatives, including Hayden Meikle, sports editor at Otago Daily Times. Winners in the categories of sportswoman, sportsman, para athlete/team, and team will also be eligible for the prestigious Supreme Halberg Award.
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony held at Spark Arena in Auckland on February 16, 2024, promising to be an exciting event celebrating the extraordinary achievements of New Zealand’s sports community.
