Natasha Bates Honored as Community Hero for Historic Kitchen Work
Volunteer efforts can transform communities, and in east Auckland, one individual stands out for her dedication and passion. Natasha Bates has been recognized with the Community Hero Award for her significant contributions at the Howick Historical Village. This recognition comes as part of a regular initiative aimed at celebrating local heroes who make a positive impact in their communities.
According to Lexie Palmer-Gapper, general manager of the Howick Historical Village, Natasha has been volunteering for over 21 years. During this time, she has embraced various roles, but her current focus is on running the kitchen at the grand homestead Puhi Nui during the village’s Live Days. Natasha’s commitment to bringing history to life is evident as she shares her favorite heritage recipes, engaging visitors with the authentic experiences of cooking on a Victorian-era coal range.
Bringing History to Life Through Cooking
Through her culinary skills, Natasha creates an immersive environment that allows visitors to experience the sights and smells of a bygone era. “By making her favorite heritage recipes, Natasha brings the past to life for our visitors through the smells, sounds, tastes – and heat! – of cooking,” Palmer-Gapper stated. Her enthusiasm extends beyond the kitchen, as she enjoys interacting with guests, explaining her baking techniques, and sharing the historical context of the dishes she prepares.
Natasha’s contributions significantly enhance the educational aspect of the Howick Historical Village. Her ability to connect with visitors creates a memorable experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for the history that the village represents. The Howick and Districts Historical Society expressed gratitude for her unwavering dedication, noting that her energy and commitment are invaluable to the community.
Recognizing Local Heroes
The Community Hero Award is sponsored by New World Howick, a local supermarket chain committed to supporting community initiatives. The recipients of this award receive a $50 New World gift card and are featured in local media, helping to raise awareness of their contributions. Community members are encouraged to nominate individuals who demonstrate similar dedication to improving the local area by sending a brief description of their efforts to the Times newspaper.
Natasha Bates serves as an inspiring example of how volunteer work can enrich a community. Her commitment to preserving and sharing local heritage through cooking not only enhances the visitor experience at Howick Historical Village but also reinforces the importance of community engagement and support.
