Beachgoers Dig Deep for Prizes at Waitārere Big Dig Event

The annual Waitārere Beach Big Dig took place on March 15, 2024, attracting holidaymakers eager to uncover hidden treasures. This beloved event, which has run for over four decades, began at 14:00 local time, drawing participants of all ages to the Horowhenua coastline. As the hooter sounded, excited diggers rushed into designated pits, eager to find one of the 300 buried discs, each representing a prize.

As the digging commenced, cheers and applause filled the air as early winners emerged with their treasures. Among them was Annabell Stace from Halcombe, who was thrilled to win a $100 travel voucher. Stace, who had been staying in a nearby caravan, shared her enthusiasm for the event, noting, “The excitement of not knowing what you could win is what keeps me coming back.”

The Big Dig is organized by the Levin and Districts Brass Band, with president Chris Craddock emphasizing the event’s community spirit and its fundraising purpose. Proceeds from the event will support the band’s initiatives, including the purchase of new music and instruments, as well as their youth education program aimed at nurturing young musical talent. Craddock expressed hope that increased participation would lead to the formation of a junior band, highlighting their recent success as champions of a New Zealand title in Christchurch.

Craddock remarked on the event’s popularity, noting, “We have amazing support from our community, and the chance to win prizes is a huge draw.” The weather played a crucial role as well, with perfect conditions contributing to a turnout of over 1,700 people this year. Last year’s event attracted 1,300 participants, and this year’s prize pool exceeded $10,000, featuring a diverse range of items from food and beverage vouchers to scooters and electronics.

Participants expressed their satisfaction with the variety of prizes. One woman was delighted to receive a new steam mop, while a young man excitedly anticipated playing with his new water balloons. A family whose son won a Big Mac voucher confirmed they planned to stop at McDonald’s on their way home.
