Search Efforts Intensify for Missing Tramper Near Lake Ōhau
A significant search operation is currently underway near Lake Ōhau in New Zealand to locate Connor Purvis, a 20-year-old tramper who has been missing since December 30. Purvis was last reported to be hiking on Mount Huxley and had planned to descend via the Huxley River South Branch. Concerns arose when he did not return as scheduled, prompting his friends and family to alert the authorities.
The police have mobilized their Search and Rescue teams, collaborating closely with Land Search and Rescue units from Omarama, Oamaru, and Dunedin. The Department of Conservation’s alpine rescue team from Aoraki/Mt Cook has also joined the efforts. Aerial support is being provided by Heliventures in Oamaru and Helicopter Line at Mount Cook.
Search Teams Explore Rugged Terrain
Search crews have conducted extensive checks of huts and campsites across the challenging landscape surrounding Lake Ōhau. Despite their efforts, no trace of Purvis has yet been found. According to Sergeant Matt Sheat, the Otago Coastal Search and Rescue Coordinator, they are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who may have been in the area around the time of Purvis’s disappearance.
“We ask anyone who has climbed Mt Huxley or has been tramping or hunting in the Huxley River South Branch between December 28 and January 2 to make contact with police if they haven’t already,” Sheat stated. He emphasized the importance of even minor details, which could be vital to the investigation.
Purvis is described as having red hair and a handlebar moustache. The police are urging anyone who may have seen or spoken to him in the South Temple, Ahuriri, or Huxley valleys during that timeframe to reach out.
Community Support and Ongoing Efforts
The search operation reflects a strong community effort, with numerous volunteers assisting the official teams. The challenging weather conditions and rugged terrain have added complexity to the search, but authorities remain dedicated to locating Purvis.
“It’s a large-scale search over a large area, and the smallest piece of information could make all the difference,” Sheat remarked, highlighting the collaborative nature of the ongoing search efforts.
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the police. Those who wish to provide tips can also email [email protected]. The search for Connor Purvis continues, with hopes for a positive outcome as teams persist in their efforts.
