A large-scale search operation is currently underway near Lake Ōhau to locate Connor Purvis, a 20-year-old tramper who was last seen climbing Mount Huxley around December 30. Concerns surfaced when Purvis did not return on schedule after planning to descend via the Huxley River South Branch. His friends and family promptly alerted authorities when they lost contact.

The search is being led by police Search and Rescue teams, supported by Land Search and Rescue units from Omarama, Oamaru, and Dunedin. Additionally, the Department of Conservation’s alpine rescue team from Aoraki/Mt Cook has joined the efforts. Aerial support is being provided by Heliventures in Oamaru and Helicopter Line at Mt Cook.

Details of the Search Efforts

Search crews have actively combed through huts and campsites across the rugged terrain surrounding the lake and mountain, but have yet to find any signs of Purvis. Otago Coastal Search and Rescue Coordinator Sergeant Matt Sheat has appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone who has climbed Mt Huxley or trekked in the Huxley River South Branch between December 28 and January 2 to reach out to the police if they have not already done so.

“We also want to hear from anyone who may have seen or spoken to Connor in the South Temple, Ahuriri, or Huxley valleys during that same timeframe,” Sheat stated.

Connor Purvis is characterized by his red hair and handlebar moustache. Authorities emphasize that even minor details could significantly impact the investigation. “It’s a large-scale search over a large area, and the smallest piece of information could make all the difference,” Sheat added.

Public Call to Action

The police have encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact them directly. Those who may have insights or details can also email [email protected].

As the search continues, the community remains hopeful for Purvis’s safe return. The ongoing efforts highlight the challenges faced by search teams in locating individuals in such rugged and expansive environments.
