Meridian Energy Apologizes for Billing Error Affecting 470 Customers
Meridian Energy has issued an apology after nearly 500 customers were mistakenly flagged as being in arrears due to a billing error. This incorrect information was automatically transmitted to two credit reporting agencies, potentially impacting the customers’ credit profiles.
The company’s chief customer officer, Lisa Hannifin, acknowledged the situation and noted that the issue arose during a transition to a new billing platform. “While that’s worked perfectly for most customers, we discovered an error that incorrectly flagged some customer accounts as being in arrears,” she stated. The glitch affected approximately 470 customer accounts over the past few weeks.
Details of the Billing Glitch
Meridian Energy is in the process of moving around 450,000 customers onto a new billing system. Although the transition has been largely successful, this particular error has highlighted potential flaws in the system. Affected customers received emails from Meridian notifying them of the mistake and the company has also reported the incident to the Privacy Commissioner.
In her comments, Hannifin expressed regret, stating, “We’ve let some of our customers down.” The company is actively working to rectify the situation and restore the affected customers’ credit standings. They have assured customers that they are taking immediate steps to resolve the issue and prevent future occurrences.
Impact and Next Steps
The ramifications of this error could be significant for those affected. Being flagged as in arrears can lead to difficulties in obtaining credit or loans, affecting customers’ financial futures. Meridian Energy has pledged to assist customers in addressing any issues that may arise from this incident.
As the situation develops, Meridian is focused on ensuring that all customers have accurate information reflected in their credit reports. The company aims to rebuild trust with its customer base and will provide updates as they continue to address the error. Customers are encouraged to contact Meridian directly for further information and assistance.
