New Zealand Artists Shine with Oscar Wins in Key Categories

New Zealand filmmakers and artists celebrated significant achievements at the recent Academy Awards, securing top honors in the Best Costume Design and Best Visual Effects categories. This recognition underscores the growing influence of New Zealand’s film industry on the global stage.

Celebrating Costume Design Excellence

Kate Hawley, a renowned costume designer, received the Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on the film Frankenstein. Accepting the award from former Vogue editor Anna Wintour and actress Anne Hathaway, Hawley expressed her gratitude towards her colleagues and collaborators. “It’s been such a privilege to stand alongside so many incredible designers,” she stated, acknowledging the talent of her fellow nominees.

Hawley also extended her thanks to director Guillermo del Toro, highlighting the significance of his vision in the project. She remarked, “Our nominations are your nominations,” indicating her desire to share the recognition with the entire production team and cast. Additionally, she conveyed her appreciation for her family, the support from New Zealand, and the team at Netflix, which financed the film. “I’m so, so grateful. Visual Effects Triumph for Wētā FX

In another stellar achievement, the Wellington-based visual effects company Wētā FX won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for its work on Avatar: Fire and Ash, directed by James Cameron. Visual effects artists Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett accepted the award on behalf of over 1,200 crew members who contributed to the project. “We are overwhelmed with gratitude and deeply honoured to receive the Visual Effects award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,” they stated.

The team emphasized that this recognition reflects years of dedication, collaboration, and a shared belief in the capabilities of cinema when artistry and technology unite in service of storytelling. They also acknowledged the exceptional film community in New Zealand, noting the unique talent and collaborative spirit that define the industry. “It is a privilege to create alongside such dedicated and innovative people,” they added, reinforcing the pride they feel in representing New Zealand on a global platform.

The Oscar and BAFTA Awards trophies won by the film will be returned to the Wētā FX studios in Wellington, symbolizing the studio’s significant achievements. Notably, this latest win means that all three films in Cameron’s Avatar series have now received the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, further solidifying the legacy of this groundbreaking franchise.
