White Ferns Embrace Heat in India Ahead of World Cup Challenge

The New Zealand women’s cricket team, known as the White Ferns, is currently undergoing rigorous preparation in India in anticipation of the upcoming Cricket World Cup. Ten batters have joined the Chennai Super Kings Academy for a specialized training camp designed to acclimatize them to the challenging conditions expected during the tournament, which runs from September to November 2023. The first match for New Zealand is set against Australia on October 1.
Intensive Training in Challenging Conditions
For many cricketers, spending hours at the batting crease in high temperatures might be daunting, but Ben Sawyer, the head coach of the White Ferns, views it as an invaluable opportunity. He emphasized the significance of this camp, stating it is the first time funding has been allocated for an overseas batting facility specifically tailored to prepare players for the rigors of international competition.
During their time in India, the players are facing a variety of bowlers on pitches known for their substantial spin. Sawyer remarked, “Our batters have had the bat in their hands for two, two and a half hours, every single day in the heat, and we just can’t get that back home.” The training regimen includes live bowlers of different styles, providing a level of competition that is difficult to replicate in New Zealand.
Strategic Acclimatization and Nutritional Support
In consultation with High Performance Sport New Zealand, Sawyer has developed a strategy for acclimatization that involves preparing players for the heat well in advance. Recommendations from experts who previously worked alongside Olympians emphasized the importance of acclimatizing two months before competition and again shortly before the event.
To support the players in managing the heat, the White Ferns’ nutritionist is providing guidance on proper hydration and nutrition. For those not traveling to India, alternative training is taking place in New Zealand, including sessions in heat chambers.
As Sawyer highlighted, “Liz Green, our high-performance boss, has done a great job in being able to get a budget for us to come here and really plan that out. I hope we’re doing everything right to give us the best chance at the World Cup.” The White Ferns will also engage in warm-up matches against England in Dubai prior to the World Cup.
The intense preparation in India aims to equip the White Ferns with the skills and resilience needed to excel in the upcoming tournament. As they continue their training, the focus remains on maximizing their performance under challenging conditions, setting the stage for a competitive showing at the Cricket World Cup.
