Musician Shane Walker has emerged as a standout performer at the 2025 Pacific Music Awards, securing two prestigious accolades: Best Pacific Male Artist and Best Pacific Song for his track “Believe.” Celebrated for his unique blend of reggae, roots, and gospel music, Walker draws inspiration from his heritage, which includes Tainui, Ngāti Mahanga, and Ngāti Whātua.

His rise in the New Zealand music scene has been notable, particularly following the success of his summer hit “Coasty Girl” in 2024. Walker expressed to Te Ao News that music serves as both a remedy and a diary for him, creating memories and leaving a legacy for future generations. Last year, he received the People’s Choice Award for Best Pacific Artist, further solidifying his impact in the industry.

The awards ceremony took place on Thursday night in Tāmaki Makaurau, where other notable artists also received recognition. Aaradhna, who led the nominations with four, was awarded Best Pacific Female Artist. Known for her soul and R&B music, Aaradhna has previously been recognized at the Aotearoa Music Awards, where she won the Best Soul/R&B Artist title in May.

In addition to Walker and Aaradhna’s wins, several other artists were honored. The Best Pacific Roots/Reggae Artist award went to Lomez Brown, while Brotherhood Musiq took home the title for Best Pacific Gospel Artist. The Best Pacific Music Video accolade was awarded to Tha Movement for their piece “The Lecture,” directed by Samson Rambo.

Key Winners and Highlights

The night saw a range of categories recognizing the diversity of the Pacific music scene. The Best Pacific Group award was presented to A.R.T, and Kenzie from Welly was named the Best Pacific Hip Hop Artist. The Best Pacific Soul/R&B Artist award went to Sam V for his work, while the Best Pacific Music Album was awarded to Jordyn with a Why for “Hibiscus Moon, Love & Justice.”

Among the notable mentions, Opetaia Foa’i, recognized as one of the South Pacific’s most influential cultural ambassadors, received the Pacific Peoples Lifetime Achievement Award. He also won the award for Best Pacific Language, highlighting his continued contributions to preserving and promoting Pacific culture.

The 2025 Pacific Music Awards not only celebrate musical achievement but also serve as a platform for cultural expression within the Pacific community. As artists like Walker and Aaradhna continue to break barriers and redefine genres, the awards reflect a vibrant and evolving musical landscape.

In summary, Walker’s achievements and the recognition of other talented artists illustrate the rich tapestry of Pacific music and its ability to resonate across generations and cultures.
