Dame Lisa Carrington Embraces Family Life Before Olympic Comeback

For the first time in 16 years, New Zealand’s kayak star, Dame Lisa Carrington, has taken a step back from the rigors of international competition. While she continues to train six days a week in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games, Carrington has enjoyed a rare opportunity for personal time and reflection. This break has allowed her to reconnect with her family, particularly her husband, Michael “Bucky” Buck, and their cavoodle, Colin, while also indulging in the simple pleasures of life back in her hometown of Ōhope.
The recent shift in Carrington’s schedule has provided her with a much-needed change of pace. As she enjoys weekends away with her husband and moments of relaxation at home, she acknowledges the challenges of stepping away from the competitive scene. “It’s been so nice to have extra time and space,” she shared, “but I’ve definitely had a bit of FOMO knowing my teammates were all off racing without me.” Her candid admission reveals the ongoing tension between her desire for self-care and her commitment to the sport.
Unexpected Return to Racing
Just days after her reflections, Carrington found herself back in racing mode, making an unexpected trip to Italy for the Canoe Sprint World Championships. This last-minute opportunity arose when fellow New Zealand paddler Olivia Brett had to withdraw due to a forearm injury. Carrington’s swift decision to step in highlights her dedication not only to her own career but also to supporting her teammates.
“It’s not something I thought was on the cards this year, but I feel grateful to be in a position where I can show up – for her, and for the K4,” Carrington expressed with enthusiasm. Her readiness to compete again demonstrates her commitment to the sport and her adaptability in the face of sudden changes.
As Carrington prepares for the world stage once more, she reflects on the importance of balance in her life. The extended break has allowed her to cultivate relationships and experience the joys of home life, which are often overshadowed by the demands of training and competition. “I’m learning that perhaps I’m not very good at relaxing!” she noted with a laugh, emphasizing her ongoing journey of self-discovery.
With the Olympic Games approaching, Carrington’s experience of blending training with personal life will undoubtedly influence her performance. Her ability to navigate these transitions reflects the resilience and dedication that have established her as a leading figure in the sport. As she balances the demands of competition with the joys of family and self-care, Carrington continues to inspire both her teammates and aspiring athletes around the world.
