Father-Son Duo Strengthens Community Ties at Minchmoor Farm

James Reid and his son Samuel are fostering a strong sense of community through their family-run business, Minchmoor Farm, located near Outram, New Zealand. Their dedication to sustainable farming practices, along with their commitment to local involvement, has earned them recognition as respected farmers within their region.
The Reids’ farm is a diverse operation, including sheep, beef, deer, and forestry. Their commitment to community is evident in their actions. In 2020, they hosted a significant event in their woolshed, gathering over 100 local contributors, from stock agents to tractor mechanics. This gathering highlighted the collaborative nature of agricultural work and the vital role family farms play in New Zealand’s economy.
After completing his studies at the University of Otago, Samuel returned to Minchmoor Farm in 2014 following a stint in Australia. He appreciates the long-term strategic thinking that comes with family farming, contrasting it with corporate approaches. “I love it,” Samuel stated, expressing no regrets about his choice of career despite the challenges farming presents.
Both James and Samuel share a philosophy focused on sustainability and community engagement. Samuel takes the lead in daily livestock operations while James oversees infrastructure. Their combined strengths allow them to maintain a thriving farm while prioritizing environmental health. James emphasizes the importance of financial discipline, healthy livestock, and minimal chemical use in their crops.
The Reid family extends their commitment beyond farming. Samuel noted their focus on community projects where their skills and resources can make a meaningful impact. They provide access to their land for various activities, including horse riding, mountain biking, and walking trails. Their farm also serves as a site for the Outram Historical Loop Track Group, which aims to connect the Outram township with the Taieri Historical Park and Outram Glen.
In addition to providing access to recreational activities, the Reids have supported local schools and community initiatives. They recently contributed a tractor and trailer to assist with the cleanup of the Lee Stream Community Hall car park. Their involvement with the Otago Vintage Machinery Club and the Taieri Historical Society further demonstrates their commitment to preserving local history and fostering community spirit.
James has also played a significant role in healthcare by serving as the secretary-treasurer of Taieri Medical Services for nearly 40 years, a position he took over from his father. This long-standing commitment underscores the family’s dedication to their community’s wellbeing.
The Reids’ farm has a rich history, including providing clay for the reconstruction of the Outram floodbank and hosting the West Taieri Pony Club for over 20 years. Additionally, the farm’s infrastructure supports about three-quarters of the electricity supply for Dunedin through power lines running across their property.
Through their efforts, James and Samuel Reid exemplify the profound impact of family-run farms on local communities. Their dedication to sustainable practices, community involvement, and intergenerational collaboration illustrates the enduring value of agriculture in New Zealand.
