Over 1,400 Dead in Afghanistan Earthquake; Taliban Calls for Aid
A devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on March 24, 2024, resulting in over 1,400 fatalities and more than 3,000 injuries, according to senior government officials. The 6.0-magnitude quake has prompted the Taliban to issue an urgent appeal for international aid as rescue workers face challenges in reaching the hardest-hit areas.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located in Nangahar Province, with the most severe damage reported in Konar Province. Local officials indicated that entire villages have been flattened, raising concerns that many individuals may still be trapped beneath the rubble. Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban Government’s chief spokesman, highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian assistance through a post on social media platform X.
Rescue Efforts Complicated by Landslides
As rescue operations continue, responders are struggling to access some regions due to landslides triggered by the earthquake, which have blocked many roads. The Taliban’s call for help underscores the critical role of international organizations during such disasters, as emphasized by Hammad, a local official. “International organisations have played a key role during such disasters in the past. We definitely need international humanitarian aid,” he stated.
The situation remains fluid, and officials have warned that the death toll may continue to rise as efforts to locate and assist those still missing are underway. Reports indicate that additional casualties have also been recorded in the nearby Laghman Province, highlighting the earthquake’s extensive impact across multiple regions.
The international community’s response will be crucial in the coming days, as Afghanistan faces not only the immediate challenges of recovery but also the long-term implications of this catastrophic event. With many areas still inaccessible, the urgency for coordinated humanitarian efforts has never been more pronounced.
As rescue teams work tirelessly, the Taliban’s request for international support reflects a broader need for collaboration in addressing the immediate humanitarian crises and rebuilding efforts in the wake of this tragedy.
