McLachlan Shifts Roles as Japan Prepares for Germany Clash

Yoshihito McLachlan, the 33-year-old tennis player, has transitioned from a teammate to a crucial support role as he assists Japan in preparing for their upcoming Davis Cup tie against Germany next weekend. Departing from a resort on Sunday, McLachlan is focused on gearing up Japan’s doubles team, which will be competing against Jan-Lennard Struff.
McLachlan, a doubles specialist with a career-high ranking of 18, previously reached the semifinals of his first Grand Slam at the 2018 Australian Open. Reflecting on his responsibilities, he stated, “Whoever’s playing the doubles, it’ll be my job to get them ready.” He successfully fulfilled a similar role during Japan’s victory over the United Kingdom in February.
Transition to National Representation
Since switching allegiance to Japan in 2017, McLachlan has represented the country on several international platforms, including the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and multiple Davis Cup ties, often partnering with the current team captain, Go Soeda. As Japan prepares for the tie, the absence of German player Alexander Zverev, currently ranked No. 3 in the world, shifts the competitive landscape. McLachlan noted, “With Zverev out, Japan has a much better chance of winning.”
Struff, who is expected to play singles for Germany, is seen by McLachlan as a formidable opponent, stating, “I’m not sure if he’ll be playing the doubles, but he’ll be playing the singles for sure. It’ll be really cool to see him again.”
Life After Retirement
Since retiring from professional tennis early last year, McLachlan has embraced fatherhood, dedicating time to his 1-year-old daughter, Jojo. His wife, Georgia, has been advancing her career in real estate during this period. McLachlan shared, “Jojo’s been awesome, so much fun, and definitely keeping me very busy. It’s been nice to be in one place for a while.” This new chapter in his life allows him to balance family responsibilities while contributing to his national team’s success.
As Japan prepares for the Davis Cup tie, McLachlan’s experience and dedication signal a strong commitment to his team and country, promising an exciting match against Germany in the coming days.
