Darth Vader’s Lightsaber Sells for $3.6 Million at Auction

A lightsaber wielded by Darth Vader has made headlines after selling for an impressive US$3.6 million (approximately US$6.1 million including buyer’s premium) at an auction in Los Angeles. This remarkable piece of film memorabilia was sold on Friday as part of Propstore’s Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, marking a record for the franchise.
The lightsaber, used by David Prowse and his stunt double Bob Anderson in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, is noted for being the only hero lightsaber from the original Star Wars trilogy ever to be auctioned. The final price reflects the high demand and cultural significance of the Star Wars franchise among collectors and fans alike.
Brandon Alinger, chief operating officer of Propstore, commented on the sale, stating, “The result marks a landmark moment not just for Propstore, but for the entire world of film collecting. To see a Star Wars lightsaber—the symbol of one of cinema’s greatest sagas—become the highest-valued piece of the franchise ever sold at auction is incredibly special.” He emphasized the enduring cultural impact of Star Wars and the passion of its fans.
The auction also featured other notable items, including a bullwhip, belt, and whip holster used by Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade which fetched US$485,100. Additionally, Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man costume sold for US$289,000, while Leonardo DiCaprio‘s screen-matched “Betty” flamethrower from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood went for US$346,000.
The auction highlights the growing market for film memorabilia, reflecting not only the financial value of such items but also their place in contemporary culture. As collectors seek to own a piece of cinematic history, events like this underscore the fascination and loyalty that iconic films continue to inspire.
