Geraldine High School Basketball Team Raises Funds for Nationals

Geraldine High School’s senior A boys basketball team has launched a scrap metal collection drive to finance their unexpected qualification for the national championship. The team earned their spot after a successful tournament, with the event set to take place in the North Island on March 15, 2024. They will compete among 12 teams in their category, comprising seven from the North Island and five from the South Island.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for the school, as they are one of only two teams from South Canterbury heading to the nationals, alongside the Waimate High School girls team, who secured their place by winning the Southern Cup on the same weekend. Point guard Ethan Hole expressed pride in their performance, noting that the boys team finished the tournament with a record of 7-1, having only lost one game. He highlighted their earlier victory against the eventual tournament champions, showcasing their competitiveness.
Community Support Drives Fundraising Efforts
The team is actively seeking community support for their trip, with fundraising spokeswoman Michelle Cramond coordinating the scrap metal collection. She stated that while the turnaround is quick, they are eager to collect scrap metal after returning to help “recover costs.” Community members can donate various items, including corrugated iron, old engines, and farm implements. A Google document has been created for donors to assist the team in identifying scrap metal on collection day.
Cayden Halsey, a team member, emphasized the significance of community support, stating, “It is a big thing for Geraldine High School; it will put Geraldine on the map.” Cramond is investigating whether this is the first time the school has reached a national basketball tournament, further highlighting the importance of this achievement.
The high school boasts a robust basketball program, with approximately 170 players from year 7 to year 13, and older students often take on coaching roles for junior players. Point guard Dillan Sami expressed hope that their national experience will allow them to teach younger players upon their return.
Local Businesses Contribute Generously
The team is grateful for the support of their coach, David Taylor, whose expertise has been instrumental in their development. They also received generous contributions from local organizations, including Geraldine Lions Club, which donated $1,000, and Freshchoice, which contributed $1,500 and is selling raffle tickets to assist with expenses. Additionally, a Givealittle page has been established to facilitate further fundraising efforts.
As the team prepares for their upcoming national competition, they are not only focused on their performance but also on fostering a sense of community and support within Geraldine High School. The players are determined to make the most of this opportunity and return with valuable experiences to share with their fellow students.
