Authorities Urge Public to Avoid Phillips’ Crime Scene Areas

The public has been warned against trespassing on private property linked to the late *Phillips*, who lived in hiding for nearly four years. Authorities emphasize that entering the area without permission constitutes trespassing. Although police cordons along *Te Anga Road* have been lifted, they continue to urge both the media and the public to refrain from visiting the sites, which remain active crime scenes as investigators gather evidence.
Phillips died on March 4, 2024, following a confrontation with police that resulted in the critical injury of an officer. The incident occurred after Phillips allegedly engaged in a burglary in *Piopio*. According to police reports, he opened fire when officers attempted to stop him, striking a police constable in the head and shoulder. Officers returned fire, fatally injuring Phillips. The injured constable is currently receiving treatment at *Waikato Hospital*.
At the scene of the shooting, one of Phillips’ children was detained, while two others were found unharmed later that day in dense bush nearby. These children are now under the care of *Oranga Tamariki*, New Zealand’s Ministry for Children.
In the aftermath of the incident, police have uncovered several makeshift camps used by Phillips and his family during their time in hiding. Detective Senior Sergeant *Andrew Saunders* revealed that the evidence suggests Phillips had assistance from others. Recovered items from the sites include quad bikes, trail bikes, tarpaulins, oil containers, tools, and even a toilet bowl. Photos taken by investigators depict tents camouflaged with netting and surrounding vegetation.
As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on piecing together the timeline and circumstances surrounding Phillips’ life on the run. The gathering of evidence from these camps is critical for understanding the extent of his activities and connections.
While police manage the crime scenes, they reiterate the importance of public cooperation in maintaining the integrity of the investigation. Trespassing on these sites not only hinders their work but also poses safety risks to individuals who may enter the area without knowledge of ongoing operations.
