New Zealand Nurses Organisation Welcomes Review of Visitor Policy

Health New Zealand has announced a review of its proposed expansion of hospital visiting hours. Initially, the agency aimed to implement a policy allowing designated family members to provide support to patients around the clock, even outside standard visiting hours. This decision has drawn mixed reactions, particularly from the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO), which represents nurses and healthcare assistants.
The NZNO’s delegate, Al Dietschin, expressed relief at the review, highlighting concerns regarding the current healthcare staffing shortages. “While it’s good to have family support, we shouldn’t be doing it at the expense of a shortage of Healthcare Assistants (HCAs),” Dietschin stated. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between patient support and adequate staffing levels to ensure quality care.
The policy was intended to enhance patient well-being by allowing family members to be present at all times. However, feedback from healthcare professionals prompted Health New Zealand to reconsider its approach. The NZNO, which advocates for safe staffing levels, raised alarms about potential strains on resources if visitor policies were expanded without additional support measures.
Dietschin underscored that there are currently no restrictive policies preventing family support in hospitals. He noted that many facilities already allow families to visit patients during specified hours, balancing both patient needs and operational capacity. The NZNO is committed to ensuring that any changes to visitor policies take into account the realities of staffing challenges faced by healthcare facilities.
As this review progresses, it remains essential for Health New Zealand to engage with healthcare professionals and consider their insights. The outcome will likely impact not just hospital operations but also the overall experience of patients and their families.
The NZNO continues to advocate for solutions that promote both patient care and staff welfare. As the healthcare landscape evolves, the organization aims to ensure that the voices of nurses and healthcare assistants are heard in discussions surrounding hospital policies.
