Magnetite Mines Secures Major Project Status for Razorback Iron-Ore
Magnetite Mines has received major project status from the Australian government for its flagship Razorback iron-ore project located in South Australia. This designation was granted by Federal Industry and Innovation Minister Tom Ayres on February 11, 2024, and will be effective for a period of three years. Razorback is now one of only 27 projects across Australia to hold this significant status, marking it as the sole iron-ore development recognized on the federal major projects list.
The major project status underscores Razorback’s scale and its anticipated national impact. It is projected to contribute approximately A$1.15 billion annually to the Australian economy once production commences. Tim Dobson, Managing Director of Magnetite Mines, highlighted the importance of this achievement, stating, “Today, Magnetite Mines is the only iron-ore project proponent in Australia to hold major project status, with Razorback becoming only the fourth South Australian major project currently recognised by the Australian government.”
The Razorback project boasts a substantial resource of 3.8 billion tonnes, positioning it for multi-decade production. This scale promises significant economic and social benefits for the Mid-North and Upper Spencer Gulf regions of South Australia. The pathway to production, however, is fraught with regulatory complexities, which include environmental considerations, native title agreements, and potential foreign investment approvals. The newly acquired major project status will facilitate dedicated federal government support, streamlining these processes and reducing investment risk.
To earn this designation, Magnetite Mines demonstrated that Razorback meets essential criteria such as strategic importance to Australia, potential contributions to economic growth and exports, and major benefits for regional communities. Additionally, the project must navigate complex federal approvals, prove commercial viability, and possess the necessary resources to advance through regulatory channels.
The major project status is expected to expedite priority approvals in 2026, which will encompass assessments under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act for mining and water supply infrastructure, as well as native title agreements and foreign investment approvals.
Magnetite Mines has also initiated collaboration with the Department of Industry, Science and Resources to develop an Australian Industry Participation Plan in line with the Australian Jobs Act. This plan aims to outline opportunities for domestic suppliers and service providers, ensuring that local communities benefit from the Razorback project’s development.
With this designation, Razorback stands poised to not only foster economic growth but also generate lasting benefits for its surrounding communities, setting a precedent for future mining projects in Australia.
