Major European Airports Disrupted by Cyber Attack on Systems
Major European airports faced significant disruptions on March 16, 2024, after a cyber attack targeted check-in systems. The incident affected key airports, including Brussels, Berlin, and London’s Heathrow, leading to cancellations and extensive delays for thousands of travelers.
Dublin and Cork airports in Ireland also reported issues. Dublin Airport indicated via X that it was experiencing “minor impacts” due to a “Europe-wide software issue.” Passengers at these airports faced challenges as the situation unfolded throughout the day.
According to the European air traffic management organization, Eurocontrol, several airports reported disruptions in IT systems specifically related to passenger handling. The scale of the attack prompted immediate responses from airport authorities and service providers.
At Brussels Airport, at least ten flights were canceled, and another 17 faced delays exceeding one hour. The airport confirmed that the problems began late on Friday, March 15, local time, when the system was compromised.
Collins Aerospace, the airport service provider, acknowledged the issue, stating, “We have become aware of a cyber-related disruption to our MUSE software in select airports.” The company is currently working to resolve the situation and restore normal operations.
The impact of this cyber attack highlights vulnerabilities within aviation technology, raising concerns among industry experts. With the increasing reliance on digital systems for passenger management, such breaches can have widespread consequences.
Airports across Europe are now on high alert as they assess the extent of the damage and implement measures to prevent future incidents. Travelers are advised to check their flight statuses and allow for extra time at the airport as operations gradually return to normal.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of cybersecurity in the aviation sector, where even minor disruptions can escalate into significant operational challenges. As authorities continue their investigations, they aim to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel across the continent.
