Pararēkau Island Welcomes First Residents After Long Wait
A luxury residential development on Pararēkau Island in South Auckland has officially welcomed its first residents, marking a significant milestone after over a decade of planning and development. The island, connected to the mainland by a secure causeway, features a gated entry system that restricts access solely to residents and authorized vehicles. Lot prices range from $1.6 million to $3.5 million for premium locations.
The journey towards this development began with a shift in land use. Previously utilized for grazing, the land saw a pivotal change in 2012 when the Environment Court approved plans for a subdivision. This approval came after developers, Ian and James Ross, committed to creating a coastal walkway that would allow public access to the island. Andrew Frost, the general manager of Ross Holdings, indicated that the project had undergone several iterations before settling on the current residential model.
In December 2023, the first residents, Paul and Mary Kenny, moved into their new home on the island. After spending 45 years in nearby Papakura, the couple sought a retirement location that offered tranquility and scenic views. Paul Kenny shared that they initially explored other developments in the area but were drawn to Pararēkau Island after hearing about the upcoming availability of titles.
“One visit and considerable research was all it took for Mary to say ‘I could live there,’ and the rest, as they say, was history,” Paul Kenny recalled. He emphasized the island’s proximity to amenities and the overall quality of the development as key factors in their decision.
Living on the island has been described as a “privilege” by the couple, who appreciate the peace and quiet accompanied by stunning views over the inner reaches of the Manukau Harbour. As more homes near completion, they look forward to welcoming new neighbors.
Concerns regarding future sea level rise have been raised in public discussions about the island, particularly on social media. Paul Kenny reflected on these worries when considering their purchase. “We found both council and the developer had exhaustively canvassed the potential for this, which made us feel very comfortable,” he stated.
Frost confirmed that the lowest section on the island is located 6.5 meters above sea level, and the entire island meets the Auckland Council’s stipulations for a 100-year sea level rise criteria. He dismissed many online comments as those of “keyboard warriors,” asserting that the council would not have permitted the subdivision if it were not safe.
The island is reportedly the only gated community island in New Zealand, with restricted vehicle access. “Vehicles can’t proceed past the gates unless they’ve got a code, so it’s a very secure island,” Frost explained. While residents can enjoy their privacy, there is a pedestrian gate for public access to walk the island’s edges between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
As Pararēkau Island begins to take shape as a residential community, the first residents are optimistic about what lies ahead and the lifestyle that this unique location offers.
