Qatar Airways Achieves Fourth Place in 2026 Safety Rankings
Qatar Airways has been recognized as the fourth safest full-service airline for 2026, according to a comprehensive assessment by safety experts at AirlineRatings. The evaluation examined a total of 320 airlines worldwide, assessing their overall safety performance.
Leading the ranking, Etihad Airways secured the top spot, followed by Cathay Pacific in second and Qantas in third place. Emirates rounded out the top five, emphasizing the competitive nature of airline safety.
Insights from AirlineRatings
Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings, highlighted the significance of this year’s results, stating that it marks the first instance of a Gulf carrier achieving the number one ranking. She attributed Etihad’s success to several factors, including a modern fleet, advancements in cockpit safety—particularly regarding turbulence management—and a history free from accidents. Notably, Etihad recorded the lowest incident rate per flight among the listed airlines and participated in an independent onboard safety audit, demonstrating excellent adherence to cabin turbulence management practices.
The methodology employed by AirlineRatings involved a thorough analysis of incident rates, adjusted for the total number of flights, fleet age, serious incidents, pilot training, and international safety audits, among other criteria. Petersen mentioned that greater emphasis was placed on turbulence prevention this year, as it remains the leading cause of in-flight injuries. The evaluation considers an airline’s involvement in the IATA Turbulence Aware programme or similar initiatives, alongside the AirlineRatings onboard safety audit. Transparency from airlines was identified as a crucial factor in the assessment process.
Understanding the Rankings
Petersen urged travelers to recognize the narrow margins separating the world’s safest airlines. She stated that small numerical differences should not be misconstrued as significant gaps in safety. “What stands out this year is how little separates the leaders,” she noted. Positions one through fourteen were covered by less than four points, with just 1.3 points separating the top six airlines in the full-service category. All airlines featured in the top 25 are recognized as leaders in aviation safety, and any claims suggesting one airline is significantly safer than another are both sensationalist and misleading.
