Abey Sparks Unveils New Album “Behold The Orb” with Ambitious Vision
Abey Sparks has released their new album, Behold The Orb, showcasing a blend of jazz influences and a unique conceptual vision. The album’s opening track invites listeners into a world where “more strange evasions” are needed, suggesting that these might be found within “the orb.” This innovative approach is supported by a backdrop of ethereal sounds, creating an immersive experience that challenges conventional musical boundaries.
Sparks, who has been based in Wellington for several years after moving from Dunedin, has expressed a deep sense of existential reflection on global injustices. In a recent phone interview, they mentioned that the album represents a “grand vision of what the world could be,” moving away from traditional authorities and structures. “What the world needs is something more ethereal, cosmic and irrational,” Sparks stated, emphasizing the album’s intention to provide an antidote to the “hard-edged tesseract” of current reality.
To bring their ambitious vision to life, Sparks assembled a talented quartet for the album’s initial performances. The group includes Chris Beernink on bass, Mitch Dwyer on guitar, and Will Hanlon on saxophone. Sparks noted the importance of choosing collaborators who lead creative lives, underscoring the collective’s ability to elevate the musical experience.
Recording took place at Tiny Triumph Recordings in January 2023, after a series of intense rehearsals. Sparks described the process as spontaneous and collaborative, with the quartet recording live in one day. Overdubs, including additional saxophones and vocals, were later added to enhance the album’s richness. Sparks utilized their laptop for much of the recording, reflecting a DIY ethos that aligns with the album’s conceptual underpinnings.
Listeners might draw parallels between Behold The Orb and the works of Kamasi Washington, particularly in its choral arrangements and genre-blending style. However, Sparks cites different influences that shaped the album’s sound. They point to Maurice Ravel‘s composition for the ballet Daphnis et Chloe and Max Roach‘s album It’s Time as significant inspirations. “The choral sounds in the Ravel work are otherworldly and magical,” Sparks noted, adding that Roach’s vocal arrangements also played a crucial role in shaping their approach.
The collaboration with vocalist Frida Flacks has added a powerful dimension to the music. Sparks praised her ability to connect with the album’s vision, creating vocal arrangements that resonate emotionally throughout the project. The interplay between the real and the otherworldly is a core theme, with Sparks emphasizing the importance of merging storytelling with sonic exploration.
The first track sets the tone with a whispered introduction, transitioning seamlessly into the bossa nova groove of “struck by the prophecy.” Sparks explained that their musical vocabulary transcends traditional genre boundaries, allowing them to evoke specific emotions and imagery. “I think about bringing together those sonic influences without thinking about prescribed categories,” they said, highlighting the fluidity of their creative process.
Sparks aims for the album to connect deeply with listeners, offering a blend of the worldly and the ethereal. As the project evolves, they continue to explore the relationship between sound and narrative, seeking to create a musical experience that is both profound and transformative. Behold The Orb is now available for download on Bandcamp, inviting audiences to experience Sparks’ innovative vision firsthand.
