This summer, musical artist Frida Flacks reflects on the songs that shape her experiences and creativity in a feature for the series “Summer Soundtracks.” Flacks, known for her unique approach to music, describes how she uses sound to evoke the frequencies and landscapes of her surroundings. Her influences include artists like Lianne La Havas, Billie Marten, and Melody Gardot, and her work captures a sense of stillness and connection.

Flacks recalls a significant memory tied to the song “Don’t Let Go” by Spawnbreezie. “This song instantly takes me back to summer 2019-2020, driving over the Auckland Harbour Bridge on a sparkling summer’s day,” she shares. The moment was filled with friends, laughter, and singing in harmony as they returned from the beach. Her background in choral music has profoundly influenced her appreciation for harmony and improvisation.

When asked about a potential anthem for New Zealand summers, Flacks suggests the band L.A.B, stating that any of their songs could resonate with crowds. “My own unofficial anthem would be ‘Ain’t No Use,’ and it comes back every year without fail,” she notes.

The summer season plays an essential role in Flacks’ creative process. She appreciates the longer days and the communal spirit that comes with warm nights spent around campfires. “Summer is a time when people slow down and come together,” she explains. This relaxed atmosphere allows her to take her time crafting songs, resulting in rich textures and meaningful connections.

Currently, Flacks is enjoying a diverse range of music on her personal summer playlist, including albums from Parcels, Cleo Sol, and Norah Jones. Interestingly, she finds joy not just in listening to music but in immersing herself in the natural sounds around her. “Taking note of the world acoustically—hearing the birds, the rush of the wind, and the ocean lapping—is my favourite kind of summer soundtrack,” she reveals.

Flacks also finds inspiration in her own space, often playing music in her room with the windows open, allowing the sun to brighten her day. Reflecting on a transformative musical experience, she highlights her time spent at open mic nights at the Waihi Beach Secret Garden. It was during the summer of 2022-2023, while working at a café, that she began learning guitar and writing music.

Initially, picking up a new instrument proved challenging, especially during her jazz degree when she felt creatively drained. “I didn’t have to be anyone, and the only expectations were the ones I set myself,” she recalls. The weekly open mic sessions became a highlight of her summer, fostering a sense of community and encouraging her to perform regularly.

These sessions often evolved into jam nights that lasted late into the evening, reigniting Flacks’ passion for music and connection. “Communicating through this other language of hearts and instruments was pure magic,” she states, expressing her desire to incorporate this spirit into every performance.

Flacks will showcase her talents in an upcoming performance titled “Frida and Friends,” scheduled for February 14 at the God’s Paramount Theatre as part of the NZ Fringe Festival. This event promises to highlight her unique musical style and the vibrant community she cherishes.

Through her reflections on summer, Flacks invites listeners to experience the magic of music and the connections it fosters, reminding us all of the beauty found in shared moments and creativity.
