A public funeral service was held today in Invercargill to honour the life of Sir Tim, a prominent public servant who passed away on January 8, 2023, at the age of 78. Family, friends, and notable political figures gathered at the Civic Theatre to celebrate a legacy marked by social activism and a dedicated career in local government.

Cousin Tui Shadbolt delivered a heartfelt eulogy, recalling Sir Tim’s extraordinary ability to engage with people. She described him as “the ultimate people person who loved a good debate,” highlighting his knack for uplifting spirits and mobilising communities. Sir Tim, she noted, exemplified leadership that was joyful and creative, often making himself the subject of jokes to foster a more inclusive atmosphere.

Despite the celebratory tone of the service, moments of controversy emerged. Partner Asha Dutt used her platform to criticise the city council, reflecting on the challenges that marred Sir Tim’s final term. She stated, “So in my heart, the council of 2019 have blood on their hands. That’s the shot I want to fire, Tim would be proud. How he exited his career, is a shame on you.” These remarks underscored the complexities of his tenure, which included conflicts with deputies and council staff, as well as a critical independent review.

Family members also shared personal anecdotes. Rob Shadbolt spoke of his father’s strong work ethic and fond adventures with his grandchildren. Another son, Ben Shadbolt, reminisced about a time when he struggled in school and expressed a desire to drop out and pursue music. “I just never forget it,” Ben recounted, “Dad just looks at me and goes ‘oh yeah, how much does a drumkit cost?’”

Among the attendees was Tāme Iti, a Māori activist and artist, who paid tribute to his friend’s commitment to activism. He recalled Sir Tim’s support during protests at Bastion Point, saying, “My friend, thank you for your support. Thank you for being with us. Thank you for being the man who you are.”

Born in Auckland in 1947, Sir Tim’s journey into public service began early. He attended Auckland University and was involved in social activism, even facing arrest on multiple occasions. His political career was distinguished, with two successful mayoral campaigns in Waitematā during the 1980s, followed by a remarkable tenure in the deep south.

Invercargill became his political stronghold after securing a by-election win in 1993. He went on to serve eight consecutive terms from 1998 until 2022, losing only twice during his nearly three-decade career. His last defeat came in 2022, when he was unseated by his deputy, Nobby Clark.

Sir Tim remained a prominent figure in the public eye throughout his career, appearing on various television shows, including Intrepid Journeys, 7 Days, and Dancing with the Stars. He also featured in a well-known cheese advertisement, famously stating, “I don’t care where, as long as I’m mayor.” His contributions to local government and the community were recognised in 2019 when he was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Survived by his partner, four sons, and a collection of published works, including A Mayor of Two Cities and Bull…t and Jellybeans, Sir Tim’s impact on his community and beyond will be remembered for years to come. His funeral service reflected not only on his achievements but also on the challenges he faced, illustrating the multifaceted nature of his legacy.
