Southland Musicians Club Rebrands as The Riff Entertainment Venue

The Southland Musicians Club has officially rebranded its venue, now known as The Riff. Located on Preston Street, this space has served as a hub for live music since 1983. The club’s president, Trevor Daley, emphasized that this name change aims to enhance the venue’s identity while preserving its legacy.

In a statement, Daley expressed optimism about the new name, stating, “We think it is a cool name that will take us into the future.” He reassured patrons that the club’s commitment to live music remains unchanged, highlighting the rich history of performances held at the venue. “We’ve seen some terrific acts performing in our club over the years — nothing about that is going to change,” he added.

Enhancing Visibility and Community Engagement

The Southland Musicians Club will retain its original entity, but the shift to The Riff is intended to boost awareness of the club’s facilities and attract more attendees to its events. Daley noted, “What we do want to change is to generate greater awareness of the facilities we have here and encourage more people to come to shows in our excellent live entertainment venue.”

The venue is celebrated for its “fantastic purpose-built performance” space, having hosted numerous local, national, and international acts for over four decades. The rebranding seeks to position The Riff at the forefront of the club’s public events and activities, ensuring that bands continue to have the opportunity to book gigs.

New leadership within the club’s committee is eager to create an inviting atmosphere for a younger audience. The rebranding will be accompanied by new street-facing signage and a vibrant mural painted inside the venue. Daley expressed pride in the club’s diverse musical offerings, noting, “We pride ourselves on the fact that we’re a musicians club and not constricted to just one genre of music and we’ve got younger musos coming through with fresh talent.”

Celebration and Upcoming Performances

The club will mark the launch of The Riff with an official opening event on March 14, 2024. The celebration will feature a free show open to the public, showcasing a variety of acts including The Commoners, Fortunate Sons, SU:N, The Cindy Syndicate, FOTA, Hoodaki, Filth Wizard, and Duncan’s Darlings.

This rebranding initiative represents a strategic move for the club, aiming to rejuvenate its image and foster a new generation of live music enthusiasts. As the venue embarks on this new chapter, it remains committed to delivering quality live entertainment while honoring its storied past.
