Amputee Mathieu Baumel Triumphs in Dakar Rally Opening Stage

Mathieu Baumel, a French navigator who recently overcame a significant health challenge, celebrated a remarkable victory in the opening stage of the Dakar Rally on January 7, 2024. Competing alongside Belgian driver Guillaume De Mevius, the duo secured first place in the perilous 305-kilometer stage held in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. This achievement comes just eleven months after Baumel underwent an amputation of his right lower leg due to an accident while assisting a motorist in France.

Reflecting on his extraordinary journey, the 49-year-old Baumel remarked, “Just being here is an enormous triumph.” This sentiment underscores the challenges he faced after the amputation, which initially cast doubt on his racing future. Despite these obstacles, he returned to the Dakar Rally, a race he has navigated successfully four times in the past, most recently in 2022 and 2023 alongside Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Race Results and Competitors

In a thrilling start to the rally, Baumel and De Mevius completed the stage in just over three hours, with Nasser Al-Attiyah finishing second, approximately 40 seconds behind in his Dacia. Czech driver Martin Prokop followed in third place, finishing 1 minute and 30 seconds off the lead.

De Mevius expressed surprise at their victory, stating, “It wasn’t particularly the objective to win today, but we said to ourselves with Mathieu that we wanted to at least win one on the Dakar stages.” The challenging terrain tested all competitors, and Al-Attiyah acknowledged the risks involved, noting, “I could have lost it all on the challenging route.” He emphasized a cautious approach after witnessing fellow competitor Sébastien Loeb suffer two flat tires.

Loeb, who initially led the field, ultimately finished in tenth place, losing valuable time due to a puncture. Meanwhile, reigning champion Yazeed Al-Rajhi faced significant setbacks after receiving a 16-minute penalty for missing a crossing point.

Looking Ahead in the Dakar Rally

As the rally progresses, competitors are set to tackle a demanding leg towards Al Ula today, covering more than 500 kilometers, with 400 kilometers of that being timed stages. In the motorcycle category, Spain’s Edgar Canet maintained his lead, benefiting from a penalty issued to Botswana’s Ross Branch for speeding in a restricted zone.

With Baumel and De Mevius starting strong, the Dakar Rally promises to deliver more intense competition as drivers and navigators face the challenges ahead. Baumel, equipped with his prosthetic limb, has already inspired many with his resilience and determination, setting a remarkable tone for this year’s event.
