Desk Yoga: 3 Exercises to Improve Posture and Relieve Tension
Long hours spent at a desk can take a toll on posture and overall physical health. This issue affects many individuals, whether they are engaged in office work or gaming. According to Anouska Shenn, a qualified yoga instructor and founder of The Office Yoga Company, prolonged sitting can lead to rounded shoulders, tight hip flexors, and weakened back muscles. These imbalances can hinder not only sitting posture but also walking, exercising, and recovery after physical activity.
Shenn emphasizes the importance of movement throughout the day to counteract these effects. “When we sit at a desk for long hours, the muscles in our back get weaker from being placed in a passive stretch,” she explains. “If we want to break the cycle, we need to move more throughout the day and return our spine to its natural alignment more often.”
To assist with this, Shenn recommends incorporating simple yoga exercises that can be performed at a desk. These beginner-friendly moves can help alleviate stiffness and correct muscular imbalances without requiring a yoga mat.
Beginner Desk Yoga Exercises
Here are three exercises suggested by Shenn that can easily be integrated into a daily routine:
1. Seated Cat-Cow
The Seated Cat-Cow is a gentle, flowing movement designed to reset posture. This exercise takes the spine through flexion and extension, helping to alleviate shoulder tension while improving overall mobility. Shenn highlights its dynamic nature, stating that it helps rebuild control over spinal movements lost from prolonged sitting.
To perform this exercise, focus on your breath, especially during the exhale. “Really drawing the lower abdominals in and up on the exhale helps you stretch into the lower back,” Shenn advises. With consistent practice, this awareness can contribute to improved posture.
2. Seated Backbend
The Seated Backbend targets the common issue of forward-pulling shoulders, which often results from extended keyboard use. This exercise opens the chest while activating the mid- and upper-back muscles, crucial for maintaining good posture.
Shenn suggests clasping your hands behind your back to enhance the stretch across the chest and shoulders. “Make sure you are breathing smoothly and easily throughout the pose,” she cautions. If you find yourself breathing shallowly, it may be beneficial to ease off the stretch or take a brief rest.
3. Seated Spinal Twist
Twisting movements are vital for maintaining spinal mobility, particularly in the thoracic region, which can become stiff from prolonged sitting. The Seated Spinal Twist serves as an excellent conclusion to a short desk yoga routine, helping to neutralize the spine after various movements.
Shenn refers to this pose as a “movement snack” that invigorates the core without exerting excessive strain. Instead of forcing the twist with the arms, it is advisable to initiate the movement from the centre of the body, allowing for controlled spinal rotation. Regular practice can counteract stiffness and enhance everyday movement.
Incorporating these desk-friendly yoga exercises can significantly improve posture and alleviate discomfort associated with long hours at a desk. By making simple adjustments during the workday, individuals can foster better physical health and overall well-being.
