FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships Set for Doha
The Local Organizing Committee of the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships has confirmed the final preparations ahead of the tournament, which will take place at Qatar University’s Sports and Events Complex from December 25 to 31, 2023. This event marks an important occasion for the host city, as Doha will be the first venue to host the championships twice, having previously done so in 2016.
Star Players and Competitive Field
During a press conference, Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, announced that the Open World Blitz Championship would feature 233 players, while the World Rapid Championship would see participation from 230 players. Al Mudahka emphasized the significance of famed Norwegian champion Magnus Carlsen, who won the gold medal in the last World Blitz Championship, as a notable participant whose presence enhances the tournament’s competitive edge.
The lineup includes several top-ranked chess stars such as Gukesh Dommaraju, the reigning World Rapid Champion, and Ian Nepomniachtchi, the current World Blitz Champion. Other prominent players include Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, and Alexander Grischuk. The tournament will also showcase emerging talents like Ivan Zemlyanskii and Yagız Kaan Erdogmus.
Women’s Competitions and Event Significance
The championships will also feature a robust women’s competition with 130 participants. Noteworthy entrants include five-time Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun, world No. 2 Tan Zhongyi, and Aleksandra Goryachkina. The presence of these elite players underscores the tournament’s commitment to promoting chess among women and younger generations.
Al Mudahka remarked on the achievement of hosting the championships in Doha for the second time, highlighting Qatar’s growing influence in the global chess community. The federation aims to elevate organizational standards and deliver a memorable event that further cements Qatar’s reputation as a chess destination.
With a total prize fund exceeding EUR 1 million, the championships promise significant competitive stakes for participants. Al Mudahka expressed gratitude for the support from the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Social and Sports Activities Support Fund, and various sponsors, all of whom are dedicated to ensuring the success of this prestigious event.
In preparation for the upcoming championships, the Organizing Committee has established several sponsorship agreements, with key figures including Yousuf Mohammed Al Nuaimi and Eng. Hamoud Al Hajri present at the signing ceremony. The event is anticipated to attract a wide audience, with ticket demand reportedly high.
Hamad Al Tamimi, Executive Director of the Qatar Chess Federation and Tournament Director, indicated that the event will be widely broadcasted across international chess platforms, allowing fans globally to engage with the competition. He emphasized the importance of providing young players with the opportunity to observe elite chess up close, fostering their development in the sport.
As the tournament nears, Eng. Hamoud Al Hajri confirmed that the Sports and Events Complex is fully prepared to host the championships, aiming to create a lasting legacy for chess in the region. The anticipation builds as Doha prepares to welcome chess enthusiasts and competitors from around the world for a thrilling week of rapid and blitz chess.
