Hastings Launches $1 Membership for Youth Sports and Recreation
A new initiative by the Hastings District Council aims to promote physical activity among local youth by offering a low-cost membership program. The program, known as Rangatahi Rise, allows young people to access public pools and the Hastings Sports Centre for just $1. This effort responds to a concerning trend of declining youth participation in sports and physical activities nationwide.
Between 2017 and 2023, research from Sport NZ highlighted a significant drop in physical engagement among young people aged 12 to 24. The Active NZ surveys revealed reductions in both overall participation and weekly activity hours, raising alarms about the health and well-being of this demographic. In light of these findings, the Hastings District Council introduced Rangatahi Rise as a practical solution to encourage more youth to engage in active lifestyles.
The membership program aims to break down financial barriers that may prevent young people from accessing recreational facilities. By offering an affordable entry point, the initiative seeks to inspire local youth to step away from sedentary activities and embrace a more active lifestyle. Hastings District Council officials believe that increasing accessibility to sports and recreational facilities can have long-term benefits for the community’s health.
Local leaders have emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of activity among youth. By making it easier for young people to participate in sports, the council hopes to reverse the current trend of declining engagement. The initiative is not only about physical fitness but also about building social connections and promoting community involvement.
In addition to the low-cost access to facilities, Rangatahi Rise is designed to create a supportive environment for participants. The Hastings District Council plans to collaborate with local organizations and schools to provide additional resources and activities that will engage young people and motivate them to stay active.
As the program rolls out, the Hastings District Council will monitor its impact on youth participation rates. They aim to assess whether the initiative effectively encourages more young people to take part in physical activities and sports. The council recognizes that fostering a healthier, more active youth population can lead to a stronger, more vibrant community overall.
With the launch of Rangatahi Rise, Hastings is taking significant steps toward addressing the national decline in youth sports participation. By providing a direct response to these challenges, local authorities hope to inspire a new generation of active, engaged young people who will contribute positively to their community.
