Health Expert Challenges Sabudana’s Superfood Status
Concerns have emerged regarding the nutritional value of sabudana, a staple in Indian fasting diets, following critical statements from a Delhi-based gastroenterologist. In a video released on November 20, 2023, Dr Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, challenged the perception of sabudana as a healthful option, calling it misleading.
Dr Vatsya asserted that sabudana, commonly used in dishes like khichdi, vada, and kheer, is predominantly composed of refined starch. “Medically speaking, sabudana is not a superfood. It is pure starch, derived from the cassava root, containing about 90% carbohydrates, with almost zero protein, fibre, or vitamins,” he explained. This composition raises questions about its suitability as a healthy dietary choice, especially for those managing their weight or blood sugar levels.
The expert further emphasized the impact of sabudana on blood sugar, noting its high glycemic index, which exceeds 70. “This can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, particularly concerning for individuals with diabetes or those who are overweight,” he warned. Frequent consumption could adversely affect insulin levels, making it crucial for certain groups to reconsider their intake of this food.
Despite these concerns, Dr Vatsya believes that sabudana can still be part of a balanced diet when combined with nutritious ingredients. “If you pair it with yoghurt, peanuts, and plenty of vegetables, these combinations can help balance out the glycemic load of sabudana,” he stated. This suggests that while sabudana should not be demonized, it requires careful consideration of how it fits into overall dietary practices.
The gastroenterologist’s remarks have ignited a broader discussion about sabudana’s role in Indian cuisine, particularly during fasting seasons when its consumption often goes unquestioned. Families may need to reassess the traditional views surrounding this ingredient, especially given its potential health implications.
As conversations around dietary health continue to evolve, Dr Vatsya’s insights serve as a reminder of the importance of informed food choices. Engaging in discussions about traditional foods and their nutritional profiles is vital for promoting better health outcomes within communities.
