Health Expert Questions Nutritional Value of Sabudana
Concerns regarding the nutritional value of sabudana, a staple in many Indian households, have surfaced following comments from a prominent medical expert. On November 20, 2023, Dr Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, Delhi, questioned the widely held belief that sabudana is a healthy food option, particularly during fasting periods.
In a video presentation, Dr Vatsya stated, “Parents might not like this, but sabudana is not as harmless as it seems.” He emphasized that sabudana, often viewed as a light and easily digestible food, is primarily composed of refined starch, derived from the cassava root. “Medically speaking, sabudana is not a superfood. It is pure starch, containing about 90% carbohydrates with almost zero protein, fibre, or vitamins,” he explained.
Dr Vatsya also highlighted the potential risks associated with its consumption, particularly its high glycemic index, which exceeds 70. This characteristic causes rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, raising concerns about its impact on insulin regulation. “Frequent consumption can impact insulin levels,” he warned, indicating that individuals with certain health conditions should approach sabudana with caution.
Despite these concerns, Dr Vatsya offered a balanced perspective, suggesting that sabudana can still fit into a healthy diet when paired with the right ingredients. He recommended combining it with yoghurt, peanuts, and a variety of vegetables to help mitigate its glycemic load. “These combinations can help balance the nutritional profile of sabudana,” he noted.
Nonetheless, he strongly advised specific groups, particularly those who are diabetic or overweight, to limit or avoid consuming sabudana regularly. “Eating sabudana frequently can be harmful to your health,” he cautioned.
Dr Vatsya’s remarks have ignited a renewed discourse around the role of sabudana in Indian culinary practices, especially during fasting periods when it is often consumed without a thorough understanding of its nutritional implications. As families prepare traditional meals that include sabudana, the medical community encourages individuals to reconsider its health benefits and potential drawbacks.
In light of these revelations, health experts advocate for a more informed approach to dietary choices, particularly concerning foods that may be perceived as healthy but can have significant health impacts when consumed in excess. The conversation surrounding sabudana serves as a reminder of the importance of nutritional awareness in everyday food choices.
