A health alert has been issued following the visit of an overseas traveler who tested positive for measles after arriving in New Zealand. The individual was deemed infectious during their stay from February 23 to February 27, 2024, which included visits to several notable locations in Wellington, such as the Cable Car and a guided tour of Parliament.

In a statement, Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora confirmed that the infected individual was in various public areas, prompting health officials to identify these locations as places of potential exposure. The alert particularly highlights that anyone present at Auckland Airport’s International Terminal between 21:00 on February 26 and 01:00 on February 27 should consider themselves as casual contacts and monitor for symptoms.

As the situation develops, Health New Zealand has expanded the list of locations of interest in Wellington. The health authority advises anyone who visited these sites during the specified times to be vigilant for signs of measles, which can include fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic rash.

The announcement comes as a reminder of the importance of vaccination and public health measures in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Health officials are working to inform the public and mitigate any potential outbreaks.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can lead to serious complications, especially in unvaccinated individuals. Health New Zealand urges those who are not fully vaccinated or have weakened immune systems to seek medical advice if they may have been exposed.

For now, authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary to ensure public safety.
