Mohamed Salah Focused on AFCON Glory Despite Liverpool Turmoil
Egypt’s national football coach, Hossam Hassan, has stated that star player Mohamed Salah remains undistracted by recent turmoil at Liverpool as he gears up to lead the team in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The tournament begins on March 15, 2024, in Agadir, Morocco, where Egypt faces Zimbabwe in their opening match.
Hassan expressed confidence in Salah’s mental state, declaring, “Salah’s morale in training is very high, as if he were just starting out with the national team. I believe he will have a great tournament with his country.” He emphasized Salah’s strong motivation, referring to him as an icon and one of the best players in the world.
Recent events at Liverpool have raised questions about Salah’s future at the club. He did not start any of Liverpool’s last five matches before departing for AFCON, and tensions escalated after a Premier League draw against Leeds United, during which Salah felt “thrown under the bus” by his coach, Arne Slot. This situation has led to speculation about a potential transfer during the January window.
Despite these challenges, Hassan downplayed the situation, stating, “I don’t consider what happened to him to be a crisis. These things often happen between players and coaches.” He reassured reporters that he has maintained contact with Salah and that the player’s focus remains solely on the tournament.
Seeking AFCON Glory
Salah, 33, aims to guide Egypt to a record-extending eighth AFCON title. Although he has not yet secured the continental championship, he has experienced heartbreak in previous finals, losing to Cameroon in 2017 and Senegal in 2022. His performance in qualifying has been impressive, helping Egypt secure a spot in the upcoming World Cup.
Hassan remarked, “Whenever Salah’s performances dip with his club, he regains his strength with the national team and becomes even better, whether by contributing to goals or scoring himself. Then he returns to his club even stronger.” This resilience is seen as crucial not only for Salah but also for the team’s aspirations in Morocco.
Egypt’s path in the tournament includes matches against South Africa and Angola in Group B, with all games taking place in Agadir. As the Pharaohs prepare for this crucial competition, the focus on Salah’s leadership and performance will be paramount in their quest for AFCON glory.
