In a stunning performance, Sahlan, a promising three-year-old colt, claimed victory in the Gr.3 Prix Daphnis held at Deauville on March 15, 2024. The race, exclusively for three-year-olds, featured a competitive lineup of 12 contenders, showcasing the depth of talent in the field.

Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard and ridden by jockey Mickaël Barzalona, Sahlan is owned and bred by Al Shaqab Racing. This victory marks a significant milestone for the homebred, who had previously demonstrated his capabilities by finishing just a nose behind a tough competitor in the Gr.3 Prix de Fontainebleau during his season opener.

Race Highlights and Strategy

Despite facing challenges in his two subsequent races, Sahlan rebounded impressively to secure his first Group win. He began the race by settling towards the back of the pack, maintaining a position in ninth alongside Tito Mo Cen, while front-runner and race favorite Scoville set a vigorous pace.

As the horses approached the final bend, the tension heightened. Scoville surged ahead, with Madero in pursuit. Meanwhile, Sahlan steadily improved his position, seeking an opening on the outside. When he found clear running space, Sahlan unleashed a powerful burst of speed, swiftly overtaking his rivals.

Final Moments and Results

Inside the final 100 meters, Sahlan surged to the front, ultimately crossing the finish line a length and a half ahead of Ciaran, with Silius, a competitor by Dubawi, finishing in third place. This decisive win at Deauville not only highlights Sahlan’s potential but also sets the stage for future challenges in his racing career.

Sahlan’s victory is a testament to the dedication and training provided by Graffard and the support from Al Shaqab Racing. As the season unfolds, this win may pave the way for more prestigious races and further accolades for this emerging star in the equestrian world.
