In response, she took Darragh to the emergency room at Mercy Health hospital in nearby Urbana.

Upon arrival, medical staff confirmed the diagnosis of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and advised that Darragh required transport to Dayton Children’s Hospital, located approximately 64 kilometers away. Yoder, worried but determined, inquired whether she could drive her son herself. The medical team firmly advised against this, stating that an ambulance was necessary.

Yoder and Darragh boarded the private ambulance. According to Yoder, the ride was uneventful; the ambulance driver did not activate the siren and maintained a standard speed. The journey lasted about 40 minutes and felt to Yoder like a straightforward transfer from one hospital to another.

However, the family’s relief was short-lived when they received a bill for the ambulance ride totaling an astonishing $16,000. This figure shocked Yoder, who reported that the cost far exceeded her expectations for such a short transport.
