Christchurch Designer Wins National Award for Innovative Kitchen
The design work of Christchurch-based kitchen designer Larissa Breukelaar has earned her the prestigious title of best kitchen in New Zealand. Breukelaar, the creative force behind Modern Age Kitchen & Joinery, received the accolade for her family home design, aptly named Whispering Curves, during the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA) People’s Choice Awards announced on September 29, 2023.
Breukelaar’s design philosophy focused on creating a space that would be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, particularly as her family grows. She envisioned a light and bright kitchen that fosters a calming atmosphere. Key features of the design include a separate clean-up zone and a designated coffee and bar area, enhancing the kitchen’s usability for daily family life.
A noteworthy aspect of the kitchen is its connection to a large vegetable garden situated just outside. This element not only adds to the kitchen’s charm but also emphasizes sustainability and local sourcing. The incorporation of curves in the island design allows for seating all around, promoting a communal space for family and friends. The color palette features crisp white cabinetry alongside the warmth of charred walnut, complemented by a sleek benchtop and minimal hardware to maintain a clean aesthetic.
Luxury in Bathroom Design
In addition to Breukelaar’s kitchen recognition, Melanie Sa’u from Melanie Sa’u Design Studio in Auckland was awarded the best bathroom for her project titled Artful Retreat. This master ensuite was designed to evoke the luxurious feel of high-end hotels, inspired by the homeowners’ frequent travels.
Sa’u’s design integrates dark timber tones, aged metal finishes, and bespoke tile work to create a sophisticated retreat. The dark-toned vanity, crafted from Melteca Boarders Oak, serves as a focal point, while a solid surface vanity top features fluid veining and a rounded basin, adding an organic touch. To enhance the warm atmosphere, Tuscan bronze tapware and hardware were used throughout the space.
According to Rachael Kwok, executive officer of the NKBA, this year’s People’s Choice Awards highlighted a trend towards “bright and light spaces with luxurious finishes,” reflecting the tastes of New Zealand’s discerning public. The People’s Choice Awards follow the annual NKBA Excellence in Design awards, which were decided earlier in September.
The recognition of both Breukelaar and Sa’u underscores the talent and creativity present in New Zealand’s design community, setting a high standard for future projects.
