Community Unites for Suicide Awareness Through Memorable Events

A new initiative in South Otago has brought the community together to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. On the Waitangi weekend, Kaitangata resident Joanne Marsh hosted the inaugural Erin Green Memorial Horse Ride in memory of her daughter, who tragically passed away in 2023. The event attracted 39 riders and successfully raised $1,800 through entry fees, donations, and a community barbecue.

In a parallel effort, Shane Bichan from Milton has been raising awareness through his own remarkable journey. Earlier this month, he completed a grueling 2,100 km trek across New Zealand on foot, which has so far raised over $38,000 for initiatives aimed at supporting those affected by suicide.

Marsh expressed her enthusiasm for the coinciding events, stating that the funds generated from the horse ride will be donated to Bichan’s Givealittle page. “We didn’t know Shane’s fundraiser would be taking place at the same time, but our committee has decided it’s a great way to support better services for all those affected by suicide in South Otago,” she said.

The importance of these initiatives cannot be overstated. “This is an issue that affects just so many people locally and nationwide,” Marsh continued. “The amazing support both we and Shane have received during these events shows how important it is to do what we can to make services more available for local people.”

Marsh poignantly added that her daughter, Erin, struggled to find help for several years. “I think she’d be pleased to see people stepping up and coming together to help improve things,” she remarked. The horse ride was chosen as a tribute to Erin, who found joy in riding on the hills above Kaitangata.

Marsh’s daughter, Jahna, participated in the ride on Erin’s beloved horse, Abby, making the event even more special for the family. “It was a special event, and we’re hoping to run it again next year,” she shared.

The community event received strong backing, and Marsh expressed gratitude to sponsors and supporters for making it possible. She also thanked landowners City Forests for granting trail access, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the initiative.
