Coopers Catch Wins Technology Award at North Canterbury Business Awards
Coopers Catch, a fish and chip shop based in Kaikoura, has been awarded the Technology Award at the recent North Canterbury Business Awards, organized by Enterprise North Canterbury. The accolade recognizes the establishment’s innovative approach to integrating technology into their operations, allowing them to better serve a growing customer base.
Recognition for Innovation in a Competitive Field
Jason Hill, co-owner of Coopers Catch, expressed his surprise and pride at receiving the award. “We were absolutely blown away to have taken out the Technology Award,” he said. “Honestly, we didn’t expect to come out on top, but now we’re beyond proud.” Competing against larger technology firms, the small shop managed to stand out with its commitment to enhancing business operations through technology.
The journey toward this achievement began during the COVID-19 lockdown, when Hill focused on streamlining their business processes. “I was worried about our business, so I was up at 04:00 every morning trying to find ways to improve our business plan,” he explained. This effort aimed to facilitate better collaboration with suppliers and contractors while ensuring customers felt valued upon entering the shop.
Transformative Technology and Community Support
The technological advancements Coopers Catch developed are designed to operate seamlessly in the background, improving both team efficiency and customer experience. Hill emphasized the significance of the award, stating, “It means so much to have the judges recognise just how the software and technology we developed here is integral to the successful running of our operations.”
Jason and his partner, Natasja Hill, took over Coopers Catch from Jason’s mother ten years ago. At that time, the shop had a limited customer base. Today, it has transformed into a popular destination for locals and visitors seeking meals or snacks. Hill extended his gratitude to their support crew, which includes family members, business consultants, and social media partners who have contributed to their success.
The recognition at the North Canterbury Business Awards not only highlights the innovative spirit of Coopers Catch but also showcases the potential for small businesses to make significant advancements in technology, even in competitive sectors. The Hills’ story serves as an inspiration for other small enterprises aiming for growth through innovation.
