Ellesmere Combined, a local netball club, successfully filled its committee during a special meeting held on March 3, 2024, at the Leeston Park clubrooms. With only five of the nine required committee members confirmed at the meeting’s outset, community support led to an enthusiastic response. A total of four additional members stepped forward, ensuring a robust committee structure for the club.

Jo Maddren, previously the senior coaching convenor, was appointed as the new president. She expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “We’ve definitely got a really strong committee. We were able to nominate a new president, all in all I would call it a success.” The continuity of the committee was crucial, as Maddren noted that it would have been “pretty heartbreaking” for the club if they had been unable to continue.

The newly formed committee’s efforts mean that Ellesmere will be able to register with the Selwyn Netball Centre for the upcoming season, allowing approximately 120 players to participate in club activities. The club, which was established in 2009 through a merger of the Leeston, Dunsandel, and Irwell clubs, has roots that date back to the 1960s.

Committee member Galbraith expressed optimism regarding the future of the club, emphasizing the diverse experience within the new committee. “We have got lots of experience in different areas, and I have no doubt that with them the club will be able to continue,” she said. The strong community backing and commitment from the new committee members have given the club renewed hope for a successful season ahead.

Ellesmere Combined’s revitalization is a testament to the dedication of its members and the local community. With a solid leadership foundation in place, the club is poised to thrive and engage more players in the sport of netball.
