Family’s DIY Bach Project Transforms Childhood Memories in Akaroa
An ambitious family project led by mechanic Bob Greenhill transformed a section in Akaroa, New Zealand, into a cherished bach, reshaping the childhood of his son, Marc Greenhill. While initially viewed by Marc as a disruption to his idyllic summer escapes to Kaiteriteri, this journey of building and creativity has evolved into a source of gratitude and cherished memories.
Growing up in Christchurch, Marc’s summers were filled with sun-soaked days at the beach, a simple holiday allowance of $5, and minimal adult supervision, allowing for carefree adventures. The joy of these experiences changed dramatically when his parents announced their plans to construct a holiday home in Akaroa, located about 90 minutes from their family home. This shift, occurring in the late 1980s, marked the end of Marc’s beach getaways.
The transition from carefree summers to a building site was significant. Bob, although not a trained builder, was resourceful and skilled, often likened to a modern-day MacGyver. He and his wife, Margaret Greenhill, dedicated countless hours to the project, despite both holding full-time jobs. “We said we’d just do it as we could afford it. That’s how it started,” Margaret recounted. Yet the reality of constructing a home proved more time-consuming than anticipated, with the project taking approximately four years to reach a watertight state.
Life on a Building Site
Living on-site in a caravan, the family adapted to their new reality. They endured makeshift showers and a host of challenges, including a close call when Marc’s brother, Glen Greenhill, narrowly escaped electrocution. Their time was punctuated by playful moments, such as sledding down hills on improvised sleds and setting up a rope swing.
Despite the hardships, these experiences fostered resilience and creativity. The Greenhills’ bach was built on a budget, often utilizing second-hand materials and items acquired on sale. Bob framed the walls in his garage, installed plumbing, and even executed some tasks typically reserved for professionals, relying on friends and customers who owed him favors. “The best thing I ever bought was a nail gun,” Bob remarked, highlighting the practical tools that made the project feasible.
Margaret noted the frustrations of the lengthy construction process, humorously comparing it to the ongoing construction of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Yet, this journey ultimately became a labor of love for Bob, who relished the challenge of building a home that would serve as a gathering place for family and friends.
Legacy of Love and Hard Work
Years later, the bach stands not only as a structure but as a testament to the family’s dedication and hard work. Marc, now reflecting on his childhood, expresses deep appreciation for the holiday home. “We are not rich, but my parents worked hard to provide this for us,” he said. The bach represents not just a physical space but a collection of memories, laughter, and resilience.
As the Greenhills continue to invest time and effort into their bach, it remains a vibrant hub of family gatherings, celebrations, and cherished moments. The initial disruption Marc felt has transformed into a profound appreciation for the experiences that shaped his youth, proving that sometimes, the most meaningful memories come from the unexpected challenges of life.
