Former Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich Passes Away at 66
Former mayor of Dunedin, Jules Radich, has died at the age of 66, following a heart attack that left him in critical condition. He passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024, at approximately 12:50 PM, surrounded by family at Dunedin Hospital. The Dunedin City Council has expressed condolences, noting the family’s request for privacy during this difficult time.
Radich began his political career when he was elected as a councillor in 2019. After serving one term, he successfully ran for mayor in 2022, defeating fellow candidate Aaron Hawkins. Although he lost the mayoralty in the 2023 elections, Radich was re-elected as a councillor, continuing his commitment to public service.
During his time as mayor, Radich was both lauded and critiqued for his strong advocacy regarding the construction of a new hospital in Dunedin. His efforts culminated in securing a government commitment that was largely viewed as satisfactory by community stakeholders. In January 2023, he remarked, “Thank goodness, we’re getting the full structure,” reflecting his relief over the project’s progress.
Despite his successes, Radich faced challenges in various initiatives. He campaigned for the reinstatement of groynes at St Clair Beach, a proposal that ultimately did not gain traction. However, he played a pivotal role in retaining the state highway one-way system through Dunedin, a decision that was well-received by many residents.
Jules Radich’s legacy in Dunedin will be remembered for his contributions to local governance and his dedication to enhancing the community’s infrastructure. His passing marks the end of an era for many in the region who appreciated his unwavering commitment to public service.
