Former Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich Passes Away at 66
Former mayor of Dunedin, Jules Radich, has died at the age of 66 after suffering a heart attack. He was taken to Dunedin Hospital in critical condition on March 6, 2024, and passed away peacefully surrounded by family around 12:50 PM on March 7, according to the Dunedin City Council. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
Political Career and Contributions
Radich was first elected as a councillor in 2019, serving one term before winning the mayoralty in 2022, defeating then-incumbent Aaron Hawkins. Although he lost the mayoral position in 2023, he returned to serve as a councillor. His time in office was marked by both praise and criticism, particularly for his advocacy regarding the construction of a new hospital in Dunedin.
During his tenure, Radich played a pivotal role in securing government approval for the new hospital’s development, which was generally regarded as a positive outcome. “Thank goodness, we’re getting the full structure,” he expressed in January 2023, highlighting his commitment to the project. His efforts were significant in a city that had long awaited improvements in healthcare facilities.
Controversial Projects and Advocacy
In addition to his work on the hospital, Radich sought to reinstate the groynes at St Clair Beach, although this initiative did not come to fruition. He was also a strong advocate for maintaining the one-way system on State Highway 1 through Dunedin, a policy that ultimately remained in place following his efforts.
Radich’s contributions to Dunedin’s local governance will be remembered, as his leadership style and priorities shaped various discussions within the community. His passing marks the end of an era for many in the region, and he is survived by family members who are now mourning his loss.
As tributes pour in from various sectors of the community, Radich’s impact on Dunedin and its residents will undoubtedly be reflected upon in the months to come.
