Former NZ Timbersports Star Nathan McDonald Passes Away at 35

A former representative of New Zealand timbersports, Nathan McDonald, has died at the age of 35 after an 18-month battle with leukaemia. He passed away on Wednesday at Pukekohe Hospital. McDonald leaves behind his wife, Ilise, and two daughters, Ella and Lily. His contributions to the sport and his community have left a lasting impact, earning him widespread recognition and admiration.

McDonald dedicated over 20 years to the woodchopping scene, showcasing his skills at various prestigious events. He represented New Zealand at the World Championships and was part of the bronze-medal-winning team at the 2022 World Championships, alongside reigning world champion Jack Jordan and the late Jason Wynward. Most recently, he competed at the 2024 New Zealand Pro Championships, finishing in fourth place, with a particular fondness for the standing block event.

Tributes Pour In from the Timber Sports Community

The timbersports community is mourning McDonald’s passing. In a heartfelt social media post, Timbersports New Zealand described him as someone who “embodied the true heart of our community.” The organization expressed its sorrow, stating, “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of the members of our Timbersports whānau, Nathan McDonald.” They highlighted his role in inspiring the next generation of woodchoppers, noting that his dedication to coaching and supporting others reflected his passion for the sport.

The Rotorua Axemen’s club also expressed their grief, calling him “a true woodchopping champion, a devoted family man, and a cherished friend.” Their message extended condolences to McDonald’s family, including his wife and daughters, as well as his parents, Lyn and Richard, and his brothers, David and Willy.

Similarly, the Tokoroa Axemen’s club paid their respects, remembering him as “a kind, humble and truly good man who was always willing to help others.” They emphasized his status as a respected axeman and sawyer, affirming that he was a champion in every sense of the word.

A Celebration of Life

A service to celebrate Nathan McDonald’s life is scheduled to take place at the Waiuku Rugby Club on Thursday. His legacy as an athlete and mentor will be honored by friends, family, and fellow competitors who were fortunate to know him.

As the woodchopping community reflects on McDonald’s contributions, his spirit will continue to inspire those who pursue excellence in timbersports. His commitment to the sport and his family leave an indelible mark, reminding everyone of the importance of passion, dedication, and community support.
