Malayali Community Celebrates Unity at Mohanam 2026 Event
The Malayali community in Aotearoa celebrated a significant milestone with the successful event, Mohanam 2026, held on February 21, 2026, at the Due Drop Events Centre in Auckland. This large-scale gathering showcased the rich culture and achievements of the community, reinforcing their unity and collective pride. Organized by Malayalam FM 104.6, the event attracted a full house of 650 guests, highlighting the increasing visibility and engagement of the Indian ethnic community in New Zealand.
A key highlight of the evening was the grand finale of the inaugural Mrs Kerala New Zealand 2026 competition. Described by organizers as a women-led initiative focused on empowerment, this competition received over 100 expressions of interest from across the country. Following a rigorous selection process that included auditions and mentoring, 15 finalists showcased their confidence, talent, leadership, and cultural identity on stage. Revathy Maya was crowned Mrs Kerala NZ 2026, while Janet Jolly Alapatt and Devika Gopi earned the titles of First Runner-Up and Second Runner-Up, respectively.
Recognizing Community Contributions
Mohanam 2026 also introduced the Community Excellence Awards, celebrating outstanding contributions within the Malayali community. Awards were presented for Malayali Nurse of the Year (both Male and Female), Organisation of the Year, and Malayali Icon of the Year, recognizing individuals and organizations that have significantly impacted the community through their years of service.
The evening was filled with entertainment, featuring a live orchestra segment, The Golden Era, which delighted attendees with classic melodies and vibrant stage performances. Notable guests included political leaders such as David Seymour, leader of the ACT Party, and List MPs Deborah Russell and Priyanca Radhakrishnan. Community leader Mahesh Murlidhar also graced the event, reflecting the importance of community engagement and support.
In summary, Mohanam 2026 served as a powerful celebration of unity, empowerment, and collective pride among the Malayali community in New Zealand. Organizers emphasized that events like this not only showcase cultural heritage but also strengthen the bonds within the community, fostering an environment of support and recognition.
