Narenda Bhana Receives King’s Service Medal for Community Work

Narendra Bhana, a prominent figure in Auckland’s Indian community, has been awarded the King’s Service Medal (KSM) for his extensive contributions to community service. The medal was presented by Dame Cindy Kiro, the Governor-General of New Zealand, during a ceremony that showcased the importance of volunteerism in society. Bhana expressed his gratitude, stating, “Receiving the King’s Service Medal is an honour beyond words.”

Bhana’s dedication spans over 15 years with the Auckland Indian Association, where he served as President from 2018 to 2022. His leadership has been pivotal in fostering unity among diverse Indian communities across New Zealand. He played a crucial role in establishing the Diaspora Group in collaboration with the Indian High Commission, which unifies various Indian groups to celebrate Indian Independence Day collectively, replacing regional festivities.

In his advocacy, Bhana addresses critical issues affecting the Indian community, including immigration, justice, education, and women’s empowerment. Following a rise in retail crime that impacted his community, he initiated discussions with the justice sector to advocate for stronger legislative measures.

Bhana is a proponent of interfaith dialogue and multicultural collaboration, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and mutual understanding. “This award is a tribute to every volunteer, mentor and community leader who continues to build bridges of understanding and unity across Aotearoa,” he remarked, acknowledging the collective efforts of those who contribute quietly yet significantly.

Beyond his advocacy, Bhana actively promotes Indian languages and culture to ensure that younger generations remain connected to their heritage. In 2023, he supported the NZICA Youth Conference, which focused on topics such as wellbeing, careers, and finance, demonstrating his commitment to engaging youth in meaningful discussions.

The King’s Service Medal is awarded by the New Zealand government to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities through volunteer service and public office. Bhana’s recognition not only highlights his personal achievements but also reflects the collective efforts of those dedicated to community service in New Zealand.
